Poor Logan, faking a hangover. I think I'll be as relieved as he is when he finally can come clean about his mutation. And, yum. I'm glad he's not being shy about showing his feelings. I suspect Marie will do enough of that for both of them.

Geez, Scott is a dumbass. I have a feeling he and Jean are going to cause a bit more trouble, interfering bastards.

Oh my goodness. Where to start. That was just heart-wrenchingly, blood-chillingly, brutal.

I really liked how "real" you kept the Jose/Marie interaction. It makes sense that she wants the money as a "safety net," her low self-esteem keeping her unconvinced that she's really someone Logan would want to have around.

Jose is mercurial enough that she's not being ridiculously stupid in choosing to face him again, but it has a very nice tragic logic that her newfound confidence / defiance is the thing that pushes him over the edge.

The stabbing scene was really well-written. I, as the reader, was just so desperately hoping for Logan to show up, even though it wasn't logical, he wouldn't have had time to stop it even if he got the phone call, but the sick feeling I got when I realized he wasn't going to make it in time was a pale mirror of what poor Marie was feeling.

So, when you say the next update won't be too long, you mean later tonight, right? Right?

Author's Response: I\'m glad the stabbing scene came across well. I kept wavering between whether to go for the gore/pain/physical details, or just focus on the emotions Marie was feeling. Hopefully the emotional side was the right choice. And yeah, it was freakin\' hard to *write* this because Logan kept trying to sneak in and suddenly, y\'know, bust into the restaurant in a blaze of claw-wielding fury and claim his woman. Sneaky feral. Jeez, Doc, you\'re killin\' me. Six chapters a day isn\'t enough? ;) lmao

Such a great chapter. I like the she was the one to "end" Jose, but not really out of malice. And this:

You don't cower. Ever.

I need a Wolverine in my head giving me motivational speeches from time to time!

A very neat idea, that Inner!Wolverine wants him absorbed, to exact his revenge ad infinitum. And so awesome that she immediately recognizes Logan as her mate once she has his senses. I hope Marie can bring closure to the families and justice for those other girls.

This was cute! Looks like you figured out the tags for italics, but if you can put spaces between the paragraphs it would be a lot easier on the eyes. I'm guessing Howl is from Howl's Moving Castle, but I've never seen it. I'll have to study up before you post the next chapter!

I'll have to admit, I wasn't immediately sold on a "no powers" story. To me their powers are so much of what makes them Logan and Marie. BUT, I am really enjoying this. You really seemed to hit your stride with this chapter. It's really well-written. I loved this part:

"...I wouldn't forgive myself if you got put in the middle of some dangerous situation."

"And I wouldn't forgive myself if I didn't put myself between you and that dangerous situation."

I like this! I'll admit, I started to read the first chapter and the lack of paragraphs got to me. I backed out. I'm so glad I came back to it...it's very interesting, and hooray for paragraphs! I respectfully suggest that you go back and add them to the first chapter so more people will be able to enjoy this story. ;-) It might also be worth having someone beta to catch a few small errors.

But I figured it out with the help of a previous reviewer and TA DA! I took your advice and went back to put the first chapter right. And I am on the hunt for a BETA to catch the slip-ups but I\'m also going to go through after a couple days and re-edit myself so hopefully the slips will be corrected. Thanks for the reviews!

This is such a great chapter. First of all, it's a really clever way to get Rogue on-site to Alcatraz. The test looking like a pregnancy test was a wry, realistic little moment. This part was great: "Her skin crackled with the sensation. She could feel it reaching out, wanting to take in the life-force of the person brave enough to challenge it. But nothing happened." Such a tense moment of first touch, and then it all goes to hell. And...aw, how sweet is Logan kissing her forehead. Yum.
