Before she could reach that fight bar in Canada, Rogue was taken in and raised by Mystique. Years later, she and Wolverine meet for the first time as fellow X-Men. Fate draws them together after a very unusual attack leaves Wolverine in a unique position to help. AU with movie/comicverse elements.

Oh, yum. Something about you and those chapter 13s. I highly approve. ;-) I like Rogue being drunk on Logan's scent. And the not being able to drive stick was a nice touch, especially how Rogue is chafing at the restrictions on her freedom and independence.

Author's Response: Thanks! Glad you enjoyed. It\'s been really fun to decide how their feral nature will impact their day-to-day lives and relationship--not to mention Marie\'s craziness on top of it. Hope you enjoy where it all ends up going! It\'s gonna be a twisty turny ride :).

Good or bad? I vote for door number three, AWESOME! A great fic so far, fast-paced and well-written. So excited the next chapter is imminent!

Author's Response: Eep! Thanks very much. That means a lot, seeing as I\'m reading through your stories right now and think they are pretty freakin\' awesome as well :).

You had me checking this site first thing in the morning to see if the next chapter was up yet, and I swear I did a little happy dance when it popped up.

This chapter was also great. Mystique is one stone-cold b*tch, huh? I like the idea of Marie absorbing the consciousness of animals, and what that might do to her. I have also been struck by the symmetry of how Marie-with-invulnerable-skin is immune to most medical interventions, leaving Logan's healing factor one of her few options. I can't wait to see how it plays out!

Author's Response: Ah, thanks so much. It may become apparent that Mystique isn\'t *quite* as heartless as she seems, but yeah. Stone-cold b*tch pretty much sums it up.

Holy wow, I have never been so irritated with Scott! Excuse me, you dork, can you just get out of there already so these two can have hot feral sex? Kthanxbai. ;-) Great chapter...please keep updating quickly, I'm on the edge of my seat here!

You rock so much! Just popped on to review Chapter 4, and there Chapter 5 is, waiting for me. :-) Anyway, best line from this chapter is the whole darn thing, but this in particular: Those hungry little sounds spilled carelessly from her throat, and he wondered what it would feel like to press his mouth over hers and swallow them as they escaped.

Author's Response: Aw thanks. I\'m glad you\'re liking the story so far. I can\'t wait til I have time to read some more of your work.

This line was just amazing: The anger left him in one big rush, claws winnowing through the muscles of his forearms as they slid in.

And so intriguing, with the personalities! You are an awesome updater, but you can't possibly update fast enough for me!

Author's Response: Aw thanks. I hope the personalities become a lot more interesting. Especially the love quadrangle between Logan and Marie and Rogue and Wolverine :). Fun stuff.

So sorry, I've been reading on my phone and slacking on the reviews again, but it's a wonderful excuse to be able to back up and re-read this great story. So many great lines in this one...this whole section was wonderful about portraying Marie's angst about untouchability without a lot of woe-is-me melodrama. To her, it just is.

Marie paused for a long moment. She sensed the sincerity in his words. But she also wondered what prompted his devotion to her. “I know Rogue has, um, led you on. She doesn’t really understand, ya know? That we can’t be touched.” Marie looked down at her flimsy nightgown, her bare hands. She shivered. “She oughta know better. She was the one always tellin’ me . . . I’ll see if I can make her wear gloves from now on.”

And I really liked this part too:

Marie was . . . her, only not. Her, only even moreso.

And, the part where Logan whines to communicate to her...yum. I love me some feral Logan, as you probably know from The Prisoner, and you do an amazing job of making his feral side real but not ridiculous.

Author's Response: Don\'t be sorry. It totally made my day to come home and see the mountain of reviews waiting haha. Thanks for taking the time to give such thoughtful feedback. And yes, feral Logan is yum. I\'m glad he came across well. But I don\'t think I could ever top your portrayal of him in The Prisoner. I\'ve told you that\'s my favorite W/R story, right?

This chapter is just awesome. You are a maestro with the sexual tension. There is more sexuality in the barest touch in your story than in a lot of fics where Rogan are banging like bunnies. ;-) This part in particular was very nice:

She made no attempt to answer. Her fingers ghosted over his lips, making him shake. The barely-there drag of silk seemed to heighten all of his senses. Little flashes of pleasure seared through him, growing stronger and stronger with every pass of her fingers—and suddenly it was too much. His hips bucked and he bit down on her.

Author's Response: Heh. Maestro. I like that. I do think that people often underestimate the power of a simple touch, skim over or flat-out ignore moments that could be drawn out a little bit and savored. I mean that both in real life and in writing, of course! Sensuality doesn\'t have to mean sex. Though make no mistake; there will be sex. Those scenes have already practically written themselves. :P.

Another great chapter. I like Scott and all but the real star of this chapter for me was the calm, authoritative interactions between Wolverine and Rogue, like this:

He just raised an eyebrow at her tantrum. “I see it. But you know he didn’t mean to invade your territory. Now stop fussing.”

You also do a really great job of portraying how confusing it is for Feral!Rogue when someone's verbal and nonverbal cues don't match.

Author's Response: I liked the dynamic there too. Glad to see someone else enjoyed it :). It\'s great to go back and skim over these chapters and see your feedback. It\'s really helping me get grounded in the story again, ready to move forward with a nice clear vision of where these characters have been and where they need to go. So thanks for that.

This chapter was genius in so many ways. I just loved this distinction Logan makes between Wolverine and Logan:

“Don’t listen to him. I want you to do this for me, Rogue. I’m askin’. It’s not a command.”

The idea of marking her with his tags was just brilliant, a nice twist on a piece of canon. Just as brilliant was the Carol torment being sort of self-produced by Marie's subconscious guilt. It never makes a lot of sense to me when Carol goes from good guy to psychopath just because she was absorbed, this seems like a very logical explanation.

Author's Response: Yeah, Carol is basically a good guy. I never understood the \'evil bitch\' persona all the stories give her, either. That was why I wanted to portray her that way in this story and put an actual reason behind it. The distinction between Wolverine and Logan is definitely interesting. I was going to make the line a bit fuzzier, but as the story evolved, they really grew to be two distinct characters. Sometimes they work as one, but sometimes they\'re diametrically opposed. Which is a cool parallel, because that\'s kinda the dynamic I see between Rogue and Marie, too.

Hooray for integration! This was a great chapter. I liked this idea a lot:

She wished he was still inside her mind. He always seemed to know what Rogue needed, whereas Marie didn’t have a clue.

Very interesting concept that Wolverine has a stronger connection with Rogue in some ways than Marie does.

Author's Response: Reviews are like candy, and you are totally spoiling me. (Don\'t get me wrong, I ain\'t complainin\'.) I think Logan does have a stronger connection with the feral Rogue than Marie does. And now that she\'s integrated, that translates to him knowing her better than she knows herself in some ways. It\'s definitely gonna be a fun ride.

I don't know what you took out, but I think the chapter as it is is damn near perfect. I will admit, though, that I share Logan's disappointment. I was hoping that an integrated Marie/Rogue = fun in the sack. I can see, though, that you made the right choice. Even if Wolverine and Rogue have chosen each other, Logan and Marie still have to be fully convinced. You do a great job of having Marie misunderstand in a way rooted in her insecurities, rather than in a sitcom-everybody-misinterprets-things-and-nobody-clears-them-up way. Very believable, even knowing how much Wolverine wanted her, that she would look back on her actions and his and see it differently. Can't wait to see how these two interact now, and adding the mansion to the mix should be even more interesting!

Author's Response: Thank you so much! I\'m glad the chapter wasn\'t as bad as I feared. There was just such a massive shift in Marie\'s own self-perception and the dynamic between her and Logan, and I wanted to get it all cross in one chapter without it feeling too rushed or far-fetched, you know? I\'m so appreciative of your feedback; it\'s great to see that what you read matches what I hoped to get across. Anyway, I\'m back to work on the next chapter now. So you get back to work on \'The Rogue\', got it? I can\'t wait for the next update.

Had to page back to see where I last reviewed...so sorry for lagging behind so much. This chapter was so intriguing! Poor Logan, how disconcerting it must be to have these clues to his past dangled in front of him.

Such a great chapter. You do an amazing job with dialogue. I love the "sleepy speech," and all your "Grrhs,' and "Nghhhs"...in all your stories -- so deliciously sexy. “Grrmph. This dialogue was great: "Yer in m’bed. Cr’wled in w’me.”
I loved this little detail too: The neat script he never remembered learning filled the page.

Author's Response: Ha! I\'m glad you like the dialogue. I try not to be too colloquial or strange with spellings, but sleepy grumpy-bear Logan was just too cute to resist.

I just love these two characters so much. This exchange:

He gave her leg a squeeze. “This okay?”

Marie turned away from him. “It feels too . . . too much.”

He took his hand back, muttering a curse. “Sorry. Next time tell me, Marie. Don’t be scared to tell me.”

Marie had only wanted him to stop moving his thumb, not to pull away completely. But she couldn’t bring herself to explain that.

And this one:
He felt his anger flare. “Oh, it’s like that, huh? Embarrassed of me?”

To his surprise, she turned into him and placed her hand over his heart. She spoke into his chest. “No. No. I am embarrassed, but not of you..."

I love how they talk to each other, but still feel there are things that have to be held back. It's never cliche between the two of them, and I admire that immensely.

Author's Response: I like that dynamic too. I think so much of what\'s between them is just innate and instinctual, and they probably couldn\'t find the words to talk about it even if they wanted to. They just kind of have a tacit understanding about some things. At least, I hope it comes across that way =)

This chapter is so ridiculously hot. Especially this line:

“Oh, God, baby, I can’t help—” he crushed her against him and licked at her lips again, a show of lust that would have been embarrassingly feral if she hadn’t whimpered and tentatively licked him back.

And this one:

“Just let me,” he muttered incoherently between kisses, “let me, darlin’, please.”

Again, I love how they talk to each other with such amazing candor. Great job!

Author's Response: If reviews were candy, I would seriously be on a sugar high right now. Yay! Thanks for taking the time to read and leave awesome feedback!

So, if you're wondering about the delay in between reviews, it's because I went back to the first few chapters to re-read Mystique's involvement in the attack, and then found myself reading the whole story again from start to finish, just reveling in the awesomeness.

So...does Charles have bad info, or was that actually another shape-shifter, posing as Mystique posing as Tiffani? Very mysterious.

I thought this was a really cool concept:
But their occasional fantasies of her were just that—fantasies. They envisioned her with slightly larger breasts, a slightly smaller waist, and always, always touchable skin. Marie had never felt flattered by their thoughts of her; mainly, they left her feeling inadequate, like she could never quite measure up to what they actually wanted.

And this part was so ridiculously sweet and heartbreaking:

But he didn’t leave. He pulled her arms around him and wrapped his around her and nuzzled into her hair. “Take your time, baby,” he said in a soft rumble, running one finger back and forth along the silver chain at the back of her neck. “You just take your time and say it.”

Marie squeezed her eyes shut. “I’m sorry—sad—sorry . . . that I liked touchin’ ya even though I knew it hurt ya,” she got out in a rush. “That’s wrong. I don’t wanna hurt ya, and I’m g-gonna t-t-try—” she lost it.

Author's Response: AH, you caught me! It was Morph all along!! Heh, just kidding =). No, there\'s a hideously over-complicated plot device at play where Mystique is concerned. You shall see. I\'m so glad this story was worth a re-read for you. Makes me think \'The Prisoner\' is totally worth a re-read too, and I should probably go do that sometime soon. Hmmmmm happy thoughts!

This chapter was awesome. Hyper-Masculine-Yet-Clingy Logan is pretty damn funny. And the dynamic with her understanding his thoughts, especially when they are a little dark and disturbing, is really interesting. Like Logan, I'm glad she's talking to him about it. So excited to hear two more chapters are on deck!

Author's Response: I think he\'s pretty funny too. Glad the humor came through! And that is definitely an interesting dynamic--even if Logan doesn\'t let himself act on his darker thoughts, he still has them. And Rogue sees it all, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Sometimes love is the unrequited kind. Rogue is growing up. Logan is in love with Jean. And nothing is simple.

Yay! A great story, and so glad that it's a follow-up to Runaway, which although an excellent one-shot cried out for a continuation. You're breaking my heart with these two, but it hurts so good! I hope you have more Roganliciousness in store, and that your title isn't *too* prophetic. Even if it is, though, I'll still enjoy the wonderful writing.

I think this is my favorite line:

He’s always there for me if I’m in trouble, or upset. He doesn’t give me love, doesn’t give me those heated glanced reserved only for Jean, but he does give me his comfort, albeit gruff and unpractised. That part of him, at least, is mine.

Author's Response: It might be a little prophetic *hides*. It\'s an aspect of the Rogan relationship I\'ve not really explored before, not without giving into my shipper side, anyway. That doesn\'t mean there won\'t be Rogan-ness though, just.. well.. ok I\'m not going to give anything away *g*

I've been reading on my phone lately, so I had to go back and see where I last reviewed, and was shocked to see I stopped at Chapter 1. You definitely deserve a review for every chapter. I think you are doing an amazing job with this little love quadrangle, and how it is affecting them all. This was my favorite line from this one:

For a moment, I stop and think. And my only thought is, was that for Scott or for Logan?

Argh, you're killing me, because I know where it is going, but these wonderful moments between them just raises my hopes because you can see how if only...if only...if only...

Dammit. Anyway, that's what makes this fic great. It's not easy, or tied up neatly, or the way things should be, but it's very real. As much as my poor Rogan heart hates it, my mind admires it very much. Anyway, the pivotal lines are these:

A strange look crosses his face. “I see,” he says. And for the first time, I know that he knows.

He sees me.

My heart just clenched with those lines, feeling what Marie would feel at that exposure. Really great.

Well, you know. That hurt, but not as bad as I expected. Maybe because you gave plenty of warning, maybe because I had a little buzz still going on from yummy Rogan sex, but more likely because it was Rogue's decision, and she made the right one. And he wasn't trying to hurt her, he wasn't stupid or callous or cowardly or even oblivious, any of the ways he could have screwed it up. She's just not the one he loves, and she knows better than to think that is workable. I'm proud of her, and it cushions the blow a little. Thanks so much for this wonderful fic. I'm anxiously awaiting the epilogue.

Most heart-cutting line:

“What?” he says, confusion clouding his vision. “I thought it was what you wanted.”

Author's Response: I could hug you. Your comments say all the best things! I was so worried about posting this last chapter that I edited it to death and back. Most of all I was worried Logan would be seen as the bad guy, when he\'s trying so hard not to be & I love that you said that! Thank you :oD I\'m going to try and post the epilogue tomorrow, so you shouldn\'t have to wait too long for it.

Reviewer: doctorg Signed star star star star star
Date: 08/02/2011 Title: Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Aw. That was a great epilogue. I was worried when it started out that Rogue would truly feel that the world began and ended with Logan, and I'm glad that wasn't the case. Even if it's just a hint of recovery, it is good to know that she sees the possibility. Hopefully she will learn that there are different kind of loves, and that different doesn't necessarily mean better or worse. And as for Logan and Jean...well, sigh. At least she picked a side, and hopefully he is happy. Which shows what a good job you did of both convincing me that he actually did love Jean (a hard sell, to say the least) and that he was really a good guy, because I actually did want him to be happy as well. Overall a masterful story, both evocative and heart-rending and bold, which is a hard combo!

Taking the cure was almost the hardest thing Marie had ever done. The hardest came soon after, when she left the X-men to build a life for herself in the "baseline" world. But years later, when her mutation returns—along with some unwelcome and unethical scientists—she has to turn to the X-Men once more.

That is, if they can find her.
