Of all the things they had been together, underneath they were more.

When he'd met her, they'd been strangers, but underneath there was more: a recognition.

When they'd shared names, they'd become acquaintances, but underneath there was more: a bond.

When they'd almost killed each other and then forgiven each other, they'd become friends, but underneath there was more: a promise.

And beneath that promise was a shared life.

They existed side-by-side for years, but, deeper than most saw, they were so twisted around each other and so tied together that they were one person, and neither one wanted anything different.

When they became lovers, all anyone saw was a jaded, old man stealing a young girl's innocence, but underneath, where the truth was, she shared it with him.

And where he saw beauty and a warm, welcoming smile, he knew underneath was the only redemption he'd ever need.
