He hated dressing up for these things. The only reason he did was for her. The girl he had brought to this place had grown up. A lot. And his feelings for her had grown as well. A lot.

So he dressed up for Xavier's galas. Made his appearance, danced the last dance with her, and left. That was the normal order of these things.

Things change.

Her dress. A red color, made her pale skin glow. It was low cut, in the front and the back. And it hugged her in all the right places.

But that wasn't the change. The change was what wasn't there. No gloves, no scarf, and if he was seeing right, no body stocking. And the Wolverine didn't miss-see things.

That wasn't the only change. Every time he thought he'd get a chance for a last dance with her, someone else beat him to it.

Finally after watching her dance with Remy, who needed to learn to how to keep his hands to himself and wouldn't Logan like to show him how, he left. He needed a cigar. He stopped on the porch, bit the end off, then lit it as he walked into the garden. He heard the song end as he walked farther into the garden. The wind blew her scent to him, and he knew she was following him. He leaned against a tree waiting for her to catch up. He heard her shivering as she walked up. When she stopped, he took his jacket off and held it out for her to slip into.

They stood there for several minutes, not saying anything. He snuffed out the last of his cigar and was about to head back. He stopped when she placed her hand on his arm.

"You're not leaving already are you? I didn't get to dance with you yet."

He pulled at his collar as he said, "Marie, you know I don't fit in at these things."

"I don't know about that. You look handsome in all black. It's like it was tailor made for you."

He snorted in disbelief. Him, look good in a monkey suit?

"Now, how about that dance?"

He held out his hand but stood still as she started back to the mansion.

"There's no music out here, Logan."

"Trust me, Marie."

They danced through the garden with ease. He told her how good she felt in his arms, how long he had wanted to hold her like this. "You look beautiful, Marie."

"How beautiful, Logan?" She had stopped dancing.

Words wouldn't suffice, he knew. He pulled her close and kissed her fiercely, relishing the taste of her. He pulled away, letting his desire for her shine in his eyes. Anything Logan had planned to say flew out into the ether as she started to unbutton his shirt and trail kisses down his chest. It was all he could do just to breathe. He came back to earth when she started to undo his zipper. Pulling her up he said, "Not here, Marie. Not like this."

His mind raced with thoughts of everything he wanted to try with her as he led them up the back stairs--the quickest way to his room.

The first time was over quickly. But Logan figured that they would have plenty of other times to perfect it. He could see in her eyes that she wished she were more experienced for him. But he figured that there would be time for that as well. He found one his favorite spots was the sensitive skin right under her ear. He explored the area with his mouth as he whispered how glad he was that she was there. That she was his.

They made love three more times that night. All the while he whispered of love, of more nights like this one, of them.

She looked like an angel as she slept. He didn't want to wake her up. But it was six, and if she didn't head back to her room soon, Scott would see her leaving. Not that Logan cared what Scott thought, he just didn't want to get his girl in trouble. "Marie, Marie, you need to wake up."

A muffled response was all he got.

"Come on, darlin'."

"Give me another minute."

"Marie, you need to get up so you can go back to your room."

She sat up suddenly when he said that, making him wonder if something was going on here that he didn't know about. "Oh, umm... give me a minute to get my stuff." She tumbled off the bed, landing in a heap on the floor. "Hey look, there's one of my shoes." He watched as she darted around the room, sheet to her chest, gathering her clothes. Then he smelled her tears.

"Marie?"

"Yeah, I think I got everything. I'll get out of your way now," she said, moving to the door.

Logan was off the bed and beside her when she went to open the door. "Marie, what's going on here?"

"I'm just trying to leave like you asked. I'm no good at the morning after thing... I've never had a one night stand."

He realized what she was saying, what she thought had happened last night. He pointed to the bed and asked, "Is that what you thought this was all about?"

"I.. I.." she stuttered, not looking at him.

"Marie?" He pulled her chin up, forcing her to look him in the eyes. That was when she broke down. First in sobs, then she started trying to talk -- to explain. Something about ex boyfriends, a plan, and her feelings. Logan wasn't sure what to do, so he just held her, tried to soothe her. "It's ok baby. You don't have to go anywhere. I just thought you might want to clean up and change before we went down for breakfast."

"You mean, you don't want me to leave?"

"Hell no, darlin. Weren't you payin attention last night?"

He saw a blush creep across her face before she said, "It's a little hazy... I was distracted."

He smiled, growled and said, "I'll be happy to repeat myself."

Her blush spread as she nodded in acceptance of his offer.

He laid her back on the bed making sure that she acknowledged his every word. They left his room hours later for lunch after he secured her promise to never leave him.
