Tonight seems like a wonderful night to sit back with a glass of wine, forget about the 3.4 trillion looming deadlines I'm supposed to meet, and finally catch up a little bit on this story. *happy sigh*

I'm always amazed by how lush and vivid your imagery is. Really, the word choice, the details you choose to include, even the tone in which it's written just combine to create such a realistic scene. The opening few paragraphs of this chapter, especially, just kind of left me awestruck. It's a gift, really, to be able to write so prettily without it coming off overdone or purple-prosy. I don't understand how you do it!

She pulled back a little with a gasp, the tingle of her mutation sending a delicious shiver up his spine. He tightened his arms around her, pulling her up against his skin again. “Easy, darlin’.”

This was probably my favorite line. So cute!

Uhhh.... and then the rest of the chapter. Not so cute. Poor horsey. Poor Melinda :(. Ugh, Shaw is just despicable (no offense, Kevin Bacon. I love you.)! I can't wait to see how they take him down.

Author's Response: Aw, you're such a lovely reviewer...so I'm not going to nag you to put down that glass of wine and get to work on The Private Dance and Feral...even though I really want to. ;-) I'm glad you liked this chapter...I did worry that I was getting too overblown with my description. I just kept adding more adjectives every time I read it over again. I'm glad you liked that line...it seemed a little like Logan to develop a bit of a fetish around Marie's skin. Yeah, Shaw is pretty bad. Poor Bonny indeed, and poor Melinda.

Somehow I knew you weren't quite done yet, you Goddess of Evil Cliffies, you! I hope you let Azazel live just long enough to deeply, DEEPLY regret that... --Wendie

Author's Response: Ha, I can at least promise it's my last cliffhanger...for this story at least. Sorry, I probably didn't let Azazel suffer enough...you can imagine a slow death from intestinal gangrene and sepsis for him, if you like. ;-)

oooh, nicely done. azazel really is a git, isn't he? can't wait for the next chapter, loved how well this one flowed. the characterisations were spot-on too. and re: your question as to what i do for a living that's busy around hallowe'en: i work in a bar and coffee shop. us irish like to drink of a samhain, y'know ;)

Author's Response: Yes, Azazel is a git, for sure. I wish I had made him suffer a little more in the end, but I didn't want it to be distracting. Thanks so much for your reviews!

“Chuck has her singing Christmas carols right now. It’s pretty festive, actually.”

LOL.

And I did not see that little twist coming at all! Get that healing on board, Logan and then slice Azazel to bits!

Author's Response: :-D I couldn't quite find a good way to kill Emma, so I had to torment her at least a little. That line was probably a little too much levity for the general tone of the chapter, but I couldn't resist.

Well, you know, I've never been a Jean-hater. Don't really understand it, actually.. So I'm one who has no trouble giving her credit of any kind.

Author's Response: Ha, actually, me either. Jean in my stories is usually pretty neutral, or even helpful in a distant kind of way. In truth, I just thought that it would be insane to give Shaw Rogue and Jean in the same place -- no matter what happens, letting Shaw get the power of the Phoenix was not an option. So, Jean gets to stay at home and work off her I've-been-drugged-for-a-month-straight headache. ;-) At one point I did consider having her show up, unplanned by the X-Men, to personally take care of Emma as revenge for her captivity, but it was just too much going on.

OH SHIT.

You sure do know how to throw in those moments, don't you? I love it when a plan comes together. ;) And how cool that you brought in Iron Man... I've been watching IM2 and reading awesomely hilarious fic lately, so I really appreciate the hat tip.

Author's Response: I'm glad you liked the plan. Yeah, you had to know Iron Man wouldn't stand idly by while some bastard steals his arc reactor, right? He insisted on being there for the battle. Thanks so much for reviewing!

Brilliant EVIL cliffie!!!!!!! I don't know who's more evil -- you or Sebastian. Honest to God, I mean that in the nicest way. I'm usually pretty good at figuring out other people's plots (obviously my own elude me something fierce or 'Bedfellows' would have been finished ages ago), but you have me completely puzzled -- and I absolutely LOVE it! --Wendie

Author's Response: I'm so glad I was able to keep you puzzled...now I just hope the payoff seems logical enough. Thanks so much for reviewing!rn

I see Rogue has located her can of wup-ass. Jean sure sold it. :) Oh Sebaaaastiaaaan... Marie's got a surprise for you...

Author's Response: Yeah...must have been hidden somewhere. ;-) As for Jean...you should know a Roganite would not give Jean so much credit. ;-) Hope you find the explanation satisfying.

Oh MAN! So excellent. The interaction with Logan and Marie was heartbreaking. I love that she's so strong and capable and ready to kick Shaw's ass. Fantastic.

Author's Response: So glad you liked it. Yeah, it is so hard to think of these guys possibly losing each other right as they found each other. Lucky thing I promised a happy ending, right? I *know*, how exciting is it to FINALLY have Rogue fully herself and in ass-kicking mode!

Love the new chapter. Such intense and desperate play of emotions all around. I can't wait for the next chapter. I know it's going to be great. :)

Author's Response: So glad you liked it...intense and desperate is definitely what I'm going for now that we're heading into the final showdown. I'm trying to rush the next chapter...it should answer all the questions. :-)

Wow, that was definitely better than Snape/Hermione BDSM (but uh, to each their own =D). I almost accidentally skipped this chapter--and that woulda been a cryin' shame, because it's awesome. Hot and sweet in equal measure. The acceptance they give each other--Logan of Marie's skin and Marie of his rougher side, was really sweet and a nice parallel.

“Sorry, sugar.” He growled softly again at the sound of her honeyed drawl, his hands restlessly clenching fistfuls of the blankets. She relented, trailing her hand back up and pressing on the firm ridge at the front of his pants, feeling his body hard and eager under her hand. He groaned, pushing up into her hand even harder, the leather almost as warm as she knew his skin would be.

“Marie...” Another plea, growled like a command, as she traced the shape of him and then scraped her fingernails down the rigid length under the taut leather. “Christ, Marie, yes...” The words dissolved into gruff, inarticulate sounds of wanting as she stroked him lazily, her mind spinning with all the things she wanted to do to him.

And. Uh. Did I mention it was hot?

Author's Response: Thanks for your review! I'm so glad you liked this chapter. I've been struck before by the parallel between Logan's hatred of his feral side and Marie's hatred of her skin, so it was fun to try to squish it all into one (or two) chapters. As for hot, let the record show I re-read selected chapters of Feral in order to get my smut mojo on, so...keep at it!

sorry for the lack of reviews for the last chapter (loved it BTW), but Hallowe'en always means we're massively busy in work. Like where this is going, and like that rogue's decided to play shaw at his own game. am looking forward to the next

Author's Response: Trying to figure out what business has a Halloween rush...costume store? All-Edgar-Allen-Poe bookstore? I'll continue to speculate. Thanks so much for reviewing, I know it's much harder to keep up with reviews when you're writing, so as long as you keep the chapters of "Stray" coming you have my full permission to forgo reviews. ;-)

You ended the chapter there? Thats mean! lol Love the chapter. the emotions are so intense. I can't wait for more! Please update soon!

Author's Response: Sorry, you know me. I'm a cliff-hanger-a-holic. I'm so glad you liked it, "intense" was definitely what I was going for. Hope to update by this weekend at the latest!

I love this chapter. The entire first section is tense. I thrilled me to see Charles being the one to advocate doing something proactive and the X-men stepping up to fight. The entire scene between Marie and Logan was incredibly sweet and loving and filled with tension.

My only question about Rogue showing up at Shaw's country house is how much of what we just saw is real and how much is Charles. Of course I haven't forgotten what Rogue did already to just bring Jean back to Logan because she thought that is what will make him happy. So the big cliffhanger is 'how far off the range is Rogue?'

Oh and Logan sooooooo has to gut Emma.

Author's Response: So glad you liked the first parts. I'll give you a hint about the third part...in my conception of things, Xavier can restrict what Emma perceives, but not create illusions or anything. So, chew on that. ;-)

I hate to say this, but if I were the one extracting vengeance, I'd do worse to Shaw for killing the horse than the girl. I cannot wait to see what end you have in store for He-Who-Needs-Killing-Worse-Than-All-Other-X-Villians-Combined. I also loved the image of Logan swinging constantly between joy and panic. I remember walking that razor's edge all the time when my kids were little and just learning to walk. Still, I suspect neither Logan or I would trade it for the world. --Wendie

Author's Response: Yeah, for some reason poor braw Bonny was much harder to kill off than Melinda. Probably because Melinda put her damn hands on our Logan, and must be punished! I think you're very accurate, in that Logan is kind of coming off a decade of numb self-involvement -- even having friends was so new to him, so having an actual loved one to care about and fear for is frankly terrifying in its newness. It probably doesn't help that Marie is throwing herself into harm's way every chance she gets. But hopefully he will realize in the end that the reward is worth the price as well.

Um...HOLY CRAP!!! I don't know that I could have handled a chapter bigger than this one if it stayed that intense through out. The reactions of the team are going to be interesting.

I love the descriptive language in this chapter. Great work.

Author's Response: Thanks! It's funny, I kept reading the first part over and over before I posted, and every time I did I added more adjectives. By the time I read it over the final time I'm like, "Wow, I shoved like five adjectives into every sentence!" I was worried it would be really distracting, so "descriptive" is an awesome compliment. Thanks again for the review!

"it was like having another heart, beating outside his body, exposed and vulnerable."

What a fantastic line. Can't wait for the next chapter. The suspense is great.

Author's Response: Aw, so glad you liked that. Ages ago when I was in high school I read all the James Bond novels, and Bond said something about how having a woman tagging along with you was like having to protect another heart. He was all irritated about it, but It really stuck with me, so I "stole" it a little. I think Wolverine has (with good reason) never much reason to worry for himself, so having to worry for someone else must be a new and terrifying experience.

I think you rob yourself by describing that as "smut". It's as much about emotion as it is sex; about self perception and self loathing and that road towards acceptance. And written with such beauty and understanding of the characters and their needs. Happy, happy sigh.

Author's Response: Aw, what a sweet review. I'm so glad that the themes of self-perception and self-loathing came across. You know me, I love to wallow in the insecurities of these characters. Thanks so much for your lovely review.
