"...choking back the Wolverine’s sudden desire to tear Azazel’s throat out with his teeth."

Glad he managed to choke back that desire. That would be . . . yucky.

The tension, the tension! I'm really liking the character dynamics here. Is it an insult to say that you write scummy lowlifes really well? 'Cause I mean it as a compliment. Seriously. They're so . . . hateable.

What does Jean have to do with all this?! *bites nails* Oh well. Guess I'll wait 'til the next chapter to find out. Thanks for getting this out in spite of the crazy weather. You actually made me smile, reading this during the genetics lab from hell . . . my labmates must think I'm nuts =D

Author's Response: Yeah, that would have been pretty gross. ;-) I'm glad you like my scummy lowlifes. That's definitely a compliment. I think your questions about Jean were at least partially answered in the next chapter. So glad to have made you smile in a bad lab. Thanks again for being such a great reviewer!

I love this chapter and the fact that he won her, though we all know she wasn't going to be going with someone else. And I'm so stoked that she's showing her backbone. I'm slightly concerned for her mental state at the moment though, unless she's a really good actress. And that's what I'm hoping. Great read!

Author's Response: I'm so glad you liked it. Hope your fears for her mental state were assuaged by the next chapter. :-)

Her voice was equally quiet as her eyes narrowed on Shaw’s. “I’ll see you dead for what you’ve done to me.”

THERE'S our girl. You are a trooper for getting this up despite Hurricane Irene. Now that I know Mother Nature is powerless against your literary strength, I shall raise my expectation for how quickly you will post the next chapter...;)

I kid, I kid...or DO I? And by the way, you ended this chapter very naughtily, naughty lady. Loves it!

Author's Response: Yeah, I think we'll be seeing more of Strong!Rogue the more she starts to remember. It just didn't seem believable that she could be strong while she still was still cut off from everything she used to be *and* thought she was crazy to boot, but the more she gets her memories back and knows Shaw is behind it the more pissed off she will get, I expect. :-)

You've written tension so thick you could spread it on toast. Outstanding! I love that Rogue isn't going down without a fight and I am very much looking forward to just how Logan plans to collect his 'winnings'. Funny, I think Rogue might be the tiniest bit excited about that, too... --Wendie

Author's Response: So glad the tension in the scene worked. That's what I was trying for, but with no real betting or knowledge of the others' cards it was hard to try to wind it up a bit. Yeah, I think I definitely know who Rogue was rooting for. ;-)

Oh--there is one way Logan can hurt Shaw, and it's the same way Magneto did it in First Class: fist against forehead, slowly and gradually introduce sharp metal object through skull, et voila. Dead Nazi! You're welcome. ;)

Author's Response: :-D But, I think that only worked because Xavier had psychically immobilized Shaw. From what I can tell, Shaw can even use simple friction to "recharge" himself, so I think even a slow impact might be something he could repulse in his usual state. Or just use his energy burst to blast Wolverine before he even breaks skin. He's a tough one -- but don't worry, I didn't start writing until I had a way to defeat him in mind. ;-)

I think you did GREAT with the poker. I play some and was going to offer to beta with the crazy weather this week, I wasn't sure when I would be able to get it done. Still LOVING IT!

Author's Response: So glad I did okay, and that you're still liking the story. Things heat up from here!

I just have to say, you are bad for my blood pressure... in a good way. The tension, she is high! ^_^ Excellent chapter. Logan's playing a very dangerous game.

Author's Response: I'm glad you found it a tense scene. Yeah, Logan really is on thin ice here. I have a feeling he is going to get busted soon. ;-)

Loved it. Shaw is not going to be a happy camper when he loses Rogue.

i'm loving this story, and i so want to read the next installment. enjoying the tension, the humour and the characterisations (spot on with azazel and emma, BTW) more, i want more!

well, this just got even more interesting! So glad that Logan won though!

Author's Response: Glad you liked it! It seemed a little melodramatic to me, but I did try to set up the foundation for it (the poker games, and Azazel's trouble-making) in previous chapters. Plus, I'm a sucker for a little melodrama.

Nice twist having Logan having to win her in a poker game. I'm glad to see Rogue showing some backbone to Shaw. Still very curious about Jean. Can't wait to find out more. Keep up the great work.

Author's Response: I'm glad you liked it. Yes, I think Rogue is going to get stronger and stronger the more she is able to access her old memories, and the more sure she gets that Shaw really is a bad guy. No doubt about that now! There's a hint of how Jean ties in in the next chapter, and soon all will be revealed. :-D

I put aside loads of laundry to settle in and read all the updates I've missed over the past week and a half and I must say, getting to read multiple chapters at a time is a vacation in and of itself! Great development here, things are really beginning to heat up. :)

Author's Response: Coming from the master of quick updates, that's quite a compliment! I'm glad you're liking the developments. Thanks so much for reviewing!

Ah ha, the plot continues to thicken! ;) I have to agree with what others have also said, your Logan is awesome! I love the fact that he is thinking and playing it smart despite his instincts to just throw down, take them out, grab Rogue and run for it. Sometimes people will write Logan as some stupid Neanderthal who can barely form sentences and I'm glad that your portrayals never follow that route. From the very beginning of this chapter, I love how you have him playing it cool and smart - establishing an alibi with the woman, making escape plans with Xavier and then correctly assessing the situation with Shaw, realizing that a move on his part could hurt Marie and subsequently backing off. Well done! And now that he knows for sure that Shaw and Emma are involved in Jean's disappearance, well, something tells me that he's going to find it even harder to just grab Marie and get the hell out of Dodge!

Author's Response: I'm glad that it's coming across as Logan being smart, and not just kind of passive. But really, Shaw's power is so tremendous, his hands are really tied, poor guy. I think you might be right about Jean being an added complication. ;-)

Okay, seriously. What a cliffhanger!!!! Aaaahhh! I can't wait to see what happens. What does Jean have to do with it? Is Logan going to get Rogue out? What is going on??? By the way, loved it, of course!!! :)

Author's Response: I think many of your questions will be answered in the next few chapters! Thanks so much for reviewing.

Okay. I officially love this Logan. His thoughts, his dialogue, picking up the young professional at the bar, waking up disoriented--just perfect, perfect characterization.

Whew. That last scene was intense. I can't wait to see how this plays out, and what the heck Jean has to do with it all! Eagerly awaiting the next chapter :).

Author's Response: I am so glad you are liking this characterization of Logan. He has to do some very uncharacteristic things in these next few chapters, which is making it quite difficult! Thanks so much for your review.

"Where was he? What the fuck war was this?" I really, really loved this line. It just stuck something in me as kinda funny but sad too. I love the confusion that it tells of.

Besides that, another great chapter. I love this story and Logan's ability to actually reason through things even when he's pissed off to the high heavens. Great characterization over all.

Author's Response: I'm glad you liked that line, especially since I wasted like an hour Googling to figure out where helicopters were deployed in the Korean war. I am not a huge fan of Origins, but the opening war-montage I thought was really well done, and I can imagine choppers being a pretty visceral trigger for someone who has been through all of that, even if he's lost half of it to adamantium-bullet amnesia.

Yep I was right, that is what I was thinking Emma and Shaw had done to Rogue - repeated and extended mental rape and complete with a filled in fabricated past. I think you did great with making the point about Logan's helplessness against Shaw. I am glad you added the layer of Jean at the end as well. He has even more to fit for now. The next 24hrs are not going to go the way Logan wants to them to I would bet.

Author's Response: Yeah, I had a feeling you were on the right track. They are pretty evil, aren't they? I'm glad the hopelessness of Logan's position against Shaw came through okay, otherwise he just seems like kind of a coward. The next 24 hours are definitely going to be action-packed!

Ah, Frustration, thy name is Logan. I'm sure such impotence is a TOTALLY foreign concept to him. Loved the scene with the 'worldly woman' -- very true to character.

As for Rogue, I can see her finding that inner strength you alluded to a while back...and she's calling it forth to protect Logan. As much as I'm loving all the intrigue and suspense, I do look forward to when these two have a minute to examine the bond they share now.

And, just so you know, I am insanely jealous of your seemingly effortless--and highly regular--update schedule. If only my muse were so cooperative... --Wendie

Author's Response: Yes, it was so hard to write, there's just not many situations in which you can see Logan being passive! I'm glad you liked the barfly...I thought she was pretty fun myself. Can you imagine the disappointment of Logan picking you up in a bar and then letting you down easy? It must have been quite a blow, but she rolled with the punches. ;-) I'm glad you find the updates frequent enough. I just try to write whether it's coming easily or not. It helps to know that my stuff isn't brilliant writing like some of the others on here -- it's just good, popcorn fun, so I don't beat myself up if I can't turn a phrase exactly to my liking. ;-)

Just wanted to let you know I'm really enjoying this story. It seems to be a deep and involved storyline, and I wish you could update more often.

Author's Response: Thanks, and thanks so much for your review! Yes, I think there may actually be a little too much plot, I'm trying to mix the elements in naturally but it's very different from my other stories in that the plot idea came first this time. And as for more frequent updates...here I thought I was doing so well with 7 chapters in 20 days! I'll try to step it up, though, just for you. ;-)

I am really really surprised Logan let Marie go back, I was expecting him to take her and bail but I suppose he is thinking about the fact that without back up to come get them they won't get far and that Shaw MAY still have Jeannie. I love the development you have between the two of them and I have an idea of what Emma and Shaw have done to Marie (and I kind of hope I am wrong since what I am thinking makes Magento and what he did on the Statue look like a pinch comparitively). Logan is going to take great pleasure in killing Emma even more than he may in killing Shaw.

Author's Response: Yeah, I think if he didn't know he would be talking to Xavier that night he probably would have tried to break them both out of there, but he's trying to control his impulsive Wolverine and do things in the smart way. I think one thing I haven't done a great job of communicating in this story is exactly how formidable an opponent Shaw is. With his power, there's almost nothing Wolverine can do to hurt him, and he is one of the few people who has the potential to really hurt Wolverine. I think the military strategist in Logan knows that he will only get one chance once Shaw knows they are actually going up against each other. Not sure what you think they are doing to Rogue, but I'm interested to know if you've guessed it! Thanks so much for reviewing.

Awesome chapter! Have I mentioned how much I look forward to your updates?! Well, this did not disappoint. Protective/possessive/comfortingLogan is a damn fantastic Logan indeed.

And that last line:

“And then I’m gonna kiss you some more.”

Well, that pretty much rocks!

Awwwww *melts*. From the opening scene at the poker table to the last line, really, really good. Poor Rogue. That would be confusing and disorienting as hell. Love how he helped calm her down--also love that he has no hesitancy thinking of another man's wife as "mine". Heh. He knows what's what.

Can't wait to see how the rest of the plot unfolds, and what Logan uncovers when he runs her prints. Gotta wonder how the heck she got mixed up with a guy like Shaw in the first place. Update. Soon. Please =D.

Author's Response: Aw, I'm so glad you found it melt-worthy. Yeah, Shaw's "gaslighting" of Rogue is pretty diabolical. I actually had a moment in there where Logan wonders where the "mine" came from, but it seemed to break the sexual tension, and honestly I don't think he has to question it. He knows what's his. ;-) Thanks so much for reviewing!

hey, i'm really enjoying this; like the idea of slowly piecing her mutation and its effects together, looking forward to more interactions with shaw. have at it, woman! :-P

Author's Response: I'm so glad you're enjoying this! This is the first story I've written where Rogue doesn't already know all about her mutation, it's quite challenging to have her figuring it out! Thanks so much for your review.
